The Power of Yes

If you do nothing unexpected, nothing unexpected happens.~ Fay Weldon ~

Many years ago, I read a book called ” Yes Man” by Danny Wallace about a man who had an extraordinarily dull life which all changed when a stranger on a bus advised him to say yes more. So he decided to say yes to every opportunity that presented it’s self to him for a period of one year, which in turn took him on many madcap adventures and totally changed his life. A very funny book.

Now I’m not suggesting for one minute that you say yes to everything, it could lead you in to some very awkward situations, in fact from memory, he very nervously ended up in a Russian gay bar !!

But, if you exercise a little common sense, and say yes to to doing things that you normally wouldn’t, some pretty surreal stuff happens.

I had better put some “meat on the bones” here before you start to panic!

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveller is unaware.” -Martin Buber

On one Sunday in Viet Nam, I was offered the chance to go and look round a museum about an hour out off town, “how exciting” I can hear you saying, and no, I wasn’t greatly enthused myself, but Quynh the young student who had taken me on my city tour, was kind enough to offer so off we went.

During the visit, i was given an attractive piece of art depicting all the ethnic minorities of Viet Nam, and hobnobbed with their nobility!

On another occasion, we ended up at a resort called Hi Long Bay, where we had, a soak in a spa followed by Vietnamese massage, ate at the finest fish restaurant, took in a fabulous water concert, and a boat trip where  we were taken where we (she) wanted to go as opposed to where it was meant to be going! The following day we visited the largest eco farm in North Viet Nam, where I was offered food and luxury accommodation for as long as I wanted to stay in Viet Nam!

These are just some very basic examples and I’d like to give you more, but I think you can get  the gist of what I’m saying, you can greatly enrich your experience by simply saying yes.

I may not have gone where I intended to go,
but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.
~ Douglas Adams

Relying on your instinct is difficult for many of us. It will take years to develop confidence. Its not the sort of thing that just just occurs.
